Despite resigning as Prime Minister and Labour Party leader this week, Gordon Brown’s closest allies have said he still has the overwhelming support of his Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath constituents.
This was apparent when The Courier spoke to people in Kirkcaldy and asked them what they thought of the MP’s decision to step down.
Alan Johnston, of Kirkcaldy, said, “I’m pretty sad to see him go because, for Kirkcaldy, he’s done quite well.
“He’s brought jobs back into Fife and improved the standard of living.”
Andrew Green, also from Kirkcaldy, said, “He’s made a lot of mistakes but he’s got his own beliefs.
“He’s made his decision and that’s it. We’ll just have to wait and see what the Conservatives do.”
Emma Bahlaj, from Lochgelly, added, “I liked Gordon Brown and voted Labour.Good job”I would have been happy for him to stay but he was almost forced into resigning.
“I think he’s done a good job and people don’t give him enough credit.
“I think he’s handled the recession really well and I don’t think anybody else could have done any better.”
Mazhar Salim and Ian McCulloch, of Kirkcaldy firm Insure Smart, were also supporters of Mr Brown.
Mr Salim said, “I don’t know much about politics and they’re all the same to me but I was gutted for the man when I saw him on TV last night.
“He’s a local guy and he’s put Kirkcaldy on the map so it’s a shame this has happened.”
Mr McCulloch added, “He came in at the wrong time. Everything he was left with were things Tony Blair had done and he got the blame.
“He was never given a chance.”
