Dundee’s players are relishing the chance to say a big thank you to their fans for helping them beat the drop.
The Dark Blues host Partick Thistle on Saturday and Barry Smith’s men will seize the opportunity to show their appreciation to the supporters.
Victory up at Ross County last weekend ensured relegation to the second division was avoided, despite the 25-point penalty that was placed on them by the SFL for going into administration.
The players still have a job to do against the Jags but once the final whistle blows there will be a very public display of gratitude in what will be the final home fixture of a tough season.
Smith said, “We are obviously all delighted to be staying in the first division, and it is the culmination of a lot of hard work.
“The lads have been good professionals and want to continue playing well and looking for victories so there will be no switching off just because we are safe.
“They want to win every game we play and that will be no different on Saturday.”
He added, “It should be a great occasion for everyone involved at Dundee and I know the players want to thank the supporters for their backing.
“They want to show their appreciation for how the fans got right behind them and helped them achieve what they have achieved.”
Smith said, “It was a sad day when the club went into administration and people lost their jobs we are only too well aware of that.
“Staying up is a real achievement, though, because after losing the 25 points I don’t think anybody apart from maybe our own fans gave us a chance of avoiding relegation.
“Now, as I look forward to the Partick game, I am delighted to be saying that I want to finish as high up the league as possible and not looking down at the bottom of the table.”
Smith has a doubt over rising star Leighton McIntosh for Saturday, saying, “He has a sore hamstring and I would say it is touch and go for him at the moment.”
