Family make Dundee FC merchandise gift in Brian Ferme’s memory

Brian Ferme, a season ticket holder with Dundee FC, watched his team play for the final time in a match against Raith Rovers on February 12 before he walked out on to Provost Road and collapsed.

He died a couple of weeks later. Mr Ferme (57) had lost his sight and attended every Dundee FC game, making use of the club’s commentary for the blind service.

He also suffered from diabetes and had other health problems.

His daughter Liz will hand over signed football merchandise on Saturday, which will be auctioned to raise money for the British Heart Foundation Scotland, in support of NHS Tayside’s Hearty Lives Dundee team.

The team tours meeting places and work places around the city to try to pick up the early signs of heart problems. They carry out simple tests and provide information, advice and support to help people lead healthier lives.

Liz will hand over the signed merchandise to British Heart Foundation Scotland volunteer John Darcy accompanied by Ninewells cardiologist Professor Stuart Pringle.

Next season the Hearty Lives team is going in to the club to carry out health checks for staff and fans.

Dundee FC Supporters’ Society wanted to take the club forward with stronger community links and one of those areas was health. Therefore in Brian’s memory the club is linking up with the team.

Community staff nurse at Taybank Medical Centre Jacqui Robertson has worked voluntarily for the club for two years and sits on the community committee for the Supporters Society, and she helped organise the link up with Hearty Lives.

Professor Pringle said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the team from NHS Tayside and BHF Scotland to work closely with the fans and staff of Dundee FC.

“The Hearty Lives nurses carry out clinical assessments, as well as giving advice and information to people to help maintain their health and reduce their blood pressure and cholesterol. Lifestyle measures are also very important.”

As well as the proceeds from auctioning the signed merchandise, a percentage of Saturday’s bucket will be donated to BHF Scotland.
