Plans to close part of the busy A92 in Fife have sparked concern, with one local councillor raising fears over the potential for “congestion, verge damage and irritation to residents.”
Donald Lothian spoke out after proposals to carry out repairs to the Eden Bridge late this summer were outlined.
Trunk road contractor BEAR Scotland is set to carry out the work.
Mr Lothian, who represents the Howe of Fife and Tay Coast ward, fears the closure could have a significantly adverse impact on neighbouring settlements, particularly the tranquil villages of Strathmiglo, Freuchie, Falkland and Auchtermuchty.
The work is set to take place over a six-week period, during which time local diversions will be put in place.
Mr Lothian pointed out that previous closures on the same section of the route had caused anxiety and considerable annoyance to local residents.
“I have written to BEAR to remind them that there will be anxiety in the communities of Freuchie, Falkland, Strathmiglo and Auchtermuchty at the prospect of diverted traffic for around six weeks,” he said.
“In particular I have highlighted the problem that occurred during the previous A92 road closure which was that additional traffic, including HGVs, used the road between Freuchie and the Monkstown junction at Ladybank, via Easter Lathrisk Farm and Shiells Farm, which resulted in congestion, verge damage and irritation to residents living in this area.”
Mr Lothian is hoping that an early dialogue with the contractors will ensure the potential for any problems is minimised.
“I have asked that BEAR discuss this particular issue with Fife Council in order to take measures to try to avoid a repeat of the same problem,” he added. “I have no doubt that the communities affected by the diversion will be concerned.”
However, Mr Lothian also pointed out that traffic volumes using a similar diversion the last time the stretch of road was closed actually turned out to be somewhat lower than anticipated.
