Street thief steals 85-year-old musician’s £1000 cornet

An 85-year-old Arbroath musician was a victim of theft as he waited to be picked up for band practice at about 7pm on Monday.

He had put a blue bag containing his £1000 silver-plated brass cornet on the ground at the junction of East Abbey Street and Abbot Street, as he walked back and forth.

He came round the corner for a last time and saw it had gone.

Peter Philbin, secretary of the Arbroath Instrumental Band, confirmed the man was a member of the group.

He said: “I don’t know what the world is coming to.”
