A woman was rescued in the early hours of Saturday morning as she was swept out to sea off Kirkcaldy.
The Kinghorn RNLI lifeboat was launched at midnight following reports of a person in the water off the promenade.
The crew carried out an extensive search of the area in conjunction with the coastguard.
The woman was eventually found 100 metres offshore. She was pulled into the lifeboat and taken ashore to a waiting ambulance.
A lifeboat spokesman said, “The female was understood to have been in the water for about an hour. When the lifeboat located the casualty she was suffering from hypothermia. The casualty was extremely lucky to be found as it was dark, and visibility was limited.”
