Henny King’s son has expressed his gratitude to the lord provost and people of Dundee for wanting to celebrate the life of his late mother.
John King was speaking from his home in Manchester before setting off for Dundee where a special service in honour of Mrs King will be held on Friday.
Henny, one of the city’s most recognisable figures, died in January at the age of 75. An exuberant personality with her trademark hats, she was a tireless supporter of community and charitable causes in her adopted Dundee home.
She latterly suffered ill health and spent the final years of her life in the Manchester area where her family live.
Mr King said his mother’s funeral was held in Bury soon after her death and in accordance with her Jewish faith.
“It was for her family and close friends but Lord Provost John Letford travelled down to be there, which we very much appreciated,” Mr King said.
“We know Dundee was a massive part of our mother’s life, and when the lord provost was at the funeral he said Dundee wanted to recognise everything she had done for the city and that it would be an honour to have a celebration of her life for her many friends in the Dundee area.
“We are very grateful to Lord Provost Letford and the people of Dundee for doing this, and the family will be travelling to Dundee for this occasion.”
The Celebration of the Life of Henny King will be held on Friday at St Mary Magdalene’s Church, in Dudhope Crescent Road, at 11am, and will be conducted by the Rev David Shepherd.
It will be followed by a civic reception and later close family and friends will gather in private at Duntrune House where some of Henny’s ashes will be buried under a tree and beside those of her second husband.
