As the triumphant Dunfermline players fly out to Majorca today for a sunshine break, they will be without the man who actually lifted the first division trophy on Saturday.
Captain Austin McCann did the honours after full-time following the Pars’ stylish and comprehensive 3-0 win over Falkirk at East End Park, and partied with the rest of them long into the night.
However, this morning he stayed at home while the rest off them got ready to jet to Magaluf, choosing instead to honour an important pledge.
“My wife was meant to go to Ibiza on Wednesday on a family holiday, which was booked months ago, but she gave it up to come here for the trophy presentation,” said McCann.
“I wanted her to experience the celebrations with me so I said because of what she had done I would take her away somewhere instead of going away with the lads.
“That means I will be missing out on Magaluf.
“What I will definitely be doing is switching my phone off for a few days to stop the boys calling me to tell me how they are enjoying themselves.
“I am sure they will have a good time without me.”
McCann admitted he had to pinch himself as he prepared to pick up the silverware, which was carried out to the centre of the park and placed on the plinth by director of football Jim Leishman.
“It was unbelievable for me,” he said.
“We may have clinched the title the previous week at Morton but it has only sunk in now.
“I have never experienced anything quite like that beforenot even close.
“At the start of the season the manager made me captain but never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined it would end up like this.
“We knew it would be a tough season but we have ended up as champions, having finished off with six successive wins including the Falkirk game.
“Promotion just means so much to everybody and it was a total team effort from everyone at Dunfermline.”
