A remarkable tennis champion has decided to sit out this year’s Tennis Championships of the Highlands at the age of 91.
George Stewart from Scone took part in the annual event at the Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry last year but decided to bow out from competitive involvement this year.
Nevertheless, Mr Stewart has been enjoying the 116th tournament on a social level.
”I went up to see my friends. I know most of the people taking part,” he said.
Mr Stewart only took up playing competitive tennis when he was 75 but went on to enjoy international success. At the age of 87 the widower, along with partner Gerry Ells, won the doubles final for the over-85s at the Super-Senior World Championships in New Zealand.
He has also won several handicap events at Pitlochry over the years.
