The energetic routine by the team from Forfar Academy won the seniors competition.
The energetic routine by the team from Forfar Academy won the seniors competition.

The Rock Challenge extravaganza drew to a close at the Caird Hall in Dundee on Wednesdday night.

Dream Big, Shine Bright was the mission for pupils taking part in the nationwide initiative over two nights.

Forfar Academy triumphed in the seniors, while Strathmore Primary made it a double for the Angus town by winning the junior section.

Forfar Academy also picked up a string of excellence awards.

Last year’s winners Arbroath High School, Dundee’s Morgan Academy, Perth High and Arbroath primaries Inverbrothock and Warddykes also took part.

Angus Council’s strategic director of People Margo Williamson said: “The event was full of energy and full of verve. It was wonderful to see so many people from across Angus, Dundee and Perth.”

Praise was given to Morgan Academy whose pupils took to the stage with their harrowing piece World War Three.

The event was supported by PQA, Angus Council, Police Scotland, Choices for Life and Zeamu Music.

Kinross High triumphed in Tuesday night’s opening heat, with Arbroath Academy in the runner-up spot and Dundee’s St John’s RC High third.

Angus Council head of schools and learning Pauline Stephen said: “The performances are always amazing and so professional.”

On Tuesday night, Arbroath Academy’s performance, Wild Things, was declared by the judges as a colourful and energetic performance.

“Arbroath Academy created a truly mesmerising performance that was performed with whole-hearted conviction. A pulsating sound track kept up the pace of the story,” said the panel.

Montrose Academy were also involved and took to the stage with their moving piece Phytophthora, based on the true events of the potato famine.

The Scottish Final will see a return to the Caird Hall in June.

After winning last year’s event, Arbroath High was not eligible for the event but automatically qualified for the northern premier final at Grimsby Auditorium in July.
