Record breaker Steven Anderson hopes to agree a new deal in order to pile up the appearances for St Johnstone.
When Anderson features for Saints for the 362nd time tomorrow as he lines up against Hearts at Tynecastle he will finally better the number of matches played by former goalkeeper Alan Main.
It is a remarkable achievement and one that may never be beaten, considering the tendency of modern-day players to stay at one team for, on average, a couple of seasons.
Anderson has spent 12 years at McDiarmid Park and he is confident that he can agree a fresh contract once Tommy Wright’s men have secured a place in the Premiership’s top six.
He said: “People talk about the record but I’m still only 30 and I intend to keep playing on.
“Hopefully, I can go a few steps further and extend the record.
“It has been 12 years but it feels longer only joking!
“Maybe when I have stopped playing I will sit back and think about it and the (Scottish Cup) final and say to myself that I have done not too badly.
“I actually came to Saints from a rival club Dundee United – so I didn’t expect to stay here so long.
“The Bosman ruling means players move on but I have always been here and I have enjoyed it.
“I moved closer to Perth and quickly got used to being a St Johnstone player.
“Oh and the reason I stayed is not for the £20,000 a week wages!
“Seriously, I’m out of contract in the summer and while the gaffer has said he wants me here long-term I have not really spoken about it.
“So there is nothing concrete yet and I think we will wait until we are in the top six at the split.
“I don’t know, though, because football is funny.
“You can be released at the end of your contract but I may be here a few more years. Who knows?”
Anderson equalled Main’s tally in Wednesday’s 1-1 home draw with Ross County, during which the defender gave away the penalty that led to the Staggies’ equaliser by fouling Liam Boyce.
He admitted it was a spotkick, adding: “It was frustrating that I gave away the penalty as I thought we dominated the game.
“It was one of those days.
“There was contact – I wouldn’t deny it so it probably is a penalty.
“First and foremost, missing out on three points is more the thing than the record.
“Still, we are a point closer to where we want to be and hopefully we can win on Saturday and finish in the top six.”
