A go-slow zone could be created in Blairgowrie town centre.
After scrapping the area’s hugely unpopular traffic lights last summer, council chiefs now want to put the brakes on passing vehicles.
Next week, councillors will consider establishing a 20mph limit in and around the town’s Wellmeadow.
The safety move has been supported by community councillors and local police.
In a report to go before Perth and Kinross Council’s enterprise and infrastructure committee on Wednesday, traffic and network manager Charles Haggart said: “The local residents and business community have raised concerns for some time about the disruption and delays to moving traffic experienced since the introduction of the traffic controlled lights at Wellmeadow.
“The local members, along with support of the community council and local businesses, requested that the existing 30mph limit be replaced with a temporary 20mph limit when the traffic-controlled lights were switched off.
“During the trial period, the temporary restriction of a 20mph speed limit has proved successful and it is now proposed to make the limit permanent,” he said.
If backed by committee members, the proposal will go to public consultation and if any objections are raised, it will be brought back to a future meeting.
The town centre traffic lights were switched off after a long-standing campaign by locals, who blamed them for major congestion problems.
Work to remove the lights was planned for December, but was postponed when businesses pointed out the roadworks could deter shoppers from coming into the town at the busiest time of the year. The work was further delayed by bad weather earlier this year.
The first phase includes the installation of a new puffin crossing by Riverside Court on Boat Brae.
The second stage will see another puffin crossing put in by the Ericht Alehouse in Wellmeadow.
Finally, the third phase will focus on safety measures at the central bus terminus, including a new puffin crossing at Gas Brae.
