Spartak Trnava 1 St Johnstone 1 (agg 3-2): Late strike sinks Saints

St Johnstone are out of the Europa League after they failed to overcome their first leg deficit away to Spartak Trnava.

Stevie May gave the Perth side hope when he levelled the tie just before half-time in Slovakia.

Tam Scobbie set the frontman up and May’s deflected shot flew past Spartak keeper Dobrivoj Rusov to find the net.

But Saints suffered a late blow chasing the second vital away goal when a defensive mistake allowed Martin Mikovic through on the visitor’s goal.

The striker was able to coolly slot past Alan Mannus to restore the home side’s one-goal aggregate advantage.

Tommy Wright’s men continued to press for another goal but were unable to breach the Spartak defence and force extra-time.
