A thief who broke into a bar in Newport-on-Tay stole cash from a safe and around 20 litres of spirits. Thousands of pounds were taken from the safe containing staff wages which was broken off the wall at the Newport bar on the high Street. Owner Mark Cashley was counting the cost of the break-in and said it looked like the thief was someone who knew the bar and knew what they were doing. He said: “They went up the fire escape and smashed a window. “They went straight for the drinks cabinet and seemed to know what they were doing. Then they broke the safe off the wall.” The building, which was bought by Mark and his wife two years ago, houses an art gallery, bar and chiropractors. It is currently undergoing renovation to add an extension and balconies to the back of the building. For more on this story see Tuesday’s Courier or try our digital edition.
