Mearns pair deny causing death by dangerous driving in caravan park

A man and woman from the Mearns have denied causing the death of a pensioner by driving dangerously in a caravan park.

Nathaniel Cooper and Kylie Johnston are both alleged to have been driving the car when holidaymaker Andrew MacKay was crushed between it and a static caravan near Turriff.

Cooper, 30, of Inverbervie, was allegedly in the driver’s seat, controlling the accelerator, brake and clutch while Johnston, 26, of Stonehaven, was operating the steering wheel from the front passenger seat.

The pair are accused of driving dangerously on the New Blyth to New Deer road and at East Balthangie Caravan Park, Cuminestown, on July 21 last year.

The charge alleges their car left the road at the caravan park, crossed the grass, drove through a fence and hit 65-year-old Mr MacKay and a static caravan.

The pair pleaded not guilty when their case called at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday.

Johnstone is also accused of driving without a licence and insurance, which she also denied.

The case will go to trial at the High Court in Aberdeen next April.
