The Royal British Legion Scotland branch in Dunfermline could be forced to close after being hit with a £90,000 tax bill.
The group is seeking money to keep the doors open after being served with a summary warrant last month.
Secretary Violet Roberts, 67, said at one point she feared being made bankrupt, as she was personally served the warrant in her capacity as Dunfermline branch representative.
She said the £91,466.49 bill is for unpaid taxes from 2007/2008.
Violet, who only took up the post two years ago, has had “sleepless nights” and questioned why she was being held responsible.
She said: “I have had two sets of sheriff’s officers at my door. The paperwork I was given stated that I was personally liable, and I could be made bankrupt.
“When I got the first letter I took it to the police. I found out that there would be court action.
“But then I got a phone call on Wednesday from the Inland Revenue that said all court proceedings would be dropped.”
Ms Roberts said that the unpaid tax bill was from 2008, when there were other office bearers at the club, and that the previous members have received letters about the issue.
She added: “The legion is going to be shut down because of this. It would still be there as a branch but the social side will be all gone.”
