Brechin City were last night in talks to secure the signature of former Scotland striker Derek Riordan ahead of tonight’s home game against Stirling Albion.
The 31-year-old ex-Hibs and Celtic hitman has twice featured as a trialist for City in the last few weeks and played in a bounce game against Montrose last week as he aims to improve his fitness.
Riordan is aiming to kickstart his career after a disappointing spell in China and following short stints at the likes of St Johnstone, Bristol Rovers and latterly Alloa, and City boss Ray McKinnon has been impressed by what he has seen so far of the forward.
So much so in fact that McKinnon is hoping a deal could be done in time for tonight’s all-important league fixture at Glebe Park.
Victory in the rearranged game would take City to within two points of fourth-placed Stranraer and McKinnon is keen to see his team get right back in the play-off hunt.
“A win would send us close to the top four which would be great when you consider the injuries we have had recently,” he said.
“But we know it will be a tough game against Stirling Albion.
“I went to see them on Saturday and they put on a very spirited performance under their new manager Stuart McLaren.
“They will be after the win to start a recovery in their league position.”
City will again be without Alan Trouten, Callum Tapping and Craig Molloy through injury.
