Ninewells Hospital and Medical School marked 40 years of providing healthcare to the people of Tayside with the closing of a time capsule.

It was placed on the main concourse at the hospital during a ceremony attended by senior officials and a select group of NHS Tayside staff, each of whom boasted at least 40 years’ service.

They were joined by former NHS Tayside Apprentice of the Year Christopher Young who designed the capsule and Invergowrie couple William and Jean Gibb.

Mr Gibb worked in the construction of the hospital for 10 years, being one of the first workmen on site back in 1965 and one of the last to leave in 1975.

Following a local appeal for suggestions for articles for the capsule, items placed inside include photographs of the hospital, diagnostic and laboratory equipment, a newspaper and an example of today’s technology.

NHS Tayside chairman Sandy Watson put the final item in the cylinder.

He said: “I hope that this time capsule will provide a snapshot of the hospital and medical school, and serve as a link from today to future generations.”
