Police investigating the Remembrance weekend mugging of an Angus ex-soldier for just £2 have issued a new appeal.
As we reported, the 82-year-old was attacked in Carnoustie’s Barry Road around 9pm on Friday November 9 by two men, believed to be in their 20s and wearing dark clothing.
He had been on his way to the town’s British Legion branch and on Remembrance Sunday told the Courier of his shock after the two men appeared “from out of nowhere” and knocked him unconscious as he waited on a bus.
The victim said they rifled through his pockets as he lay dazed on the ground, possibly looking for a mobile phone. The pair ended up taking just two £1 coins.
A passing van driver took the octogenarian to the Legion and, although he suffered a grazed cheek in the incident, the man did not require hospital treatment.
Police Scotland today said they had spoken to the good Samaritan van driver, but are now keen to trace other passers-by who may have come to the pensioner’s aid in the immediate aftermath of the mugging.
Detective Inspector Frank McManus said: “Following our appeal for the driver of a white van to come forward, he has now been traced and spoken to.
“Further inquiries have revealed it appears that the victim was assisted by the man and the woman. We would ask that the couple get in touch with us.”
Anyone with information is asked to phone police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
