An Angus woman has told of her desperate attempt to stop her pet dog being attacked by an escaped Staffordshire bull terrier.
Annette Spence, 56, of Carnoustie, had just left her quiet cul-de-sac home at about 2pm on Tuesday to take Gem for a walk when the loose staffie “came out of nowhere” and ran towards them.
She was forced to drag her petrified dog away from danger and lock her in the garage while she attempted to chase the determined Staffie off.
A woman eventually appeared to take possession of the Staffie and said it was a two-year-old rescue dog that had escaped from the garden.
Mrs Spence was speaking just days after an expert warned that Tayside’s dangerous dogs menace will eventually result in a fatal attack.
Luckily, her nine-year-old rottweiler was not injured in the attack but she was left understandably shaken by the incident.
As there is a primary school in the area Mrs Spence contacted police to report the incident and informed Angus Council’s dog warden service. She said she was upset it appears nothing can be done about the incident because nobody was injured.
Mrs Spence said: “It appears that no alleged responsible agencies are willing to act on such incidents until someone is wounded or worse, fatally injured.
“Surely by then it is too late. As a dog lover and responsible owner this concerns me greatly.”
Angus Council said it is aware of the reported incident and the dog warden is investigating it.
Police are also investigating a new report of a Staffie attack in Montrose at the weekend.
