Brothers who were involved in a “stramash” at the end of an all-day golf outing drink session have been told by a sheriff they have a “lot of growing up to do”.
Robert and Richard Sellar had been boozing since early in the day on July 5 last year, when they became involved in an argument with younger drinkers in Brechin’s High Street.
At Forfar Sheriff Court, Robert Sellar, 30, of Mill Street, Montrose, admitted assaulting a man by punching him repeatedly on the face; damaging a glazed door by punching it and resisting arrest.
Richard Sellar, 29, of Union Street, Brechin, also admitted a charge of assault.
Nick Markowski, solicitor for Robert Sellar, told the court: “This incident is entirely alcohol related. They had been on a golf outing that started around 9am and alcohol was consumed during the day. This all happened around midnight when they returned to Brechin.
“He didn’t know any of the complainers at that time but subsequent to this has formed a friendship (with the man he assaulted) and they acknowledge each other on the street.”
Richard Sellar’s agent, Nick Whelan, said: “The brothers had been at the golf outing, got separated and my client’s recollection is that he stumbled across the aftermath of the original stramash involving his brother.
“He saw blood on his brother’s face, remonstrated with the man and that developed into a further stramash.
“He, too, has made his peace with the individuals involved.”
Sheriff Gregor Murray told the pair: “You both have a bit of growing up to do, as far as I can see.”
He fined Robert Sellar £400 and imposed a £280 compensation order, and fined Richard Sellar £300.
