Montrose 1 Queen’s Park 2: Shields rues loss of ‘sloppy goals’

Montrose manager George Shields was frustrated that his side came away with nothing to show for their efforts after the 2-1 defeat from Queen’s Park at Links Park.

“We started the game really well, probably the best we’ve started in the last few weeks and I’m really disappointed that we didn’t take anything from the match,” he said.

“We created more chances than Queen’s Park but failed to take them and in addition we lost sloppy goals.

“It’s a problem that keeps recurring week after week and although we work hard on it in training, it keeps happening.”

“Having said that, I’ve every confidence in the players. They’re a good group, but they simply aren’t getting the breaks at the moment.”

Queen’s grabbed the lead very much against the run of play in the 24th minute when John Carter took advantage of hesitancy in the Montrose defence to slot the ball past Stuart McKenzie and the Spiders doubled their advantage eight minutes before half-time when Paul Woods rose above the home defence to head home a Darren Miller corner.

Montrose battled hard to get back into the game and reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 64th minute when Garry Wood converted after Leighton McIntosh had been brought down by Patrick Slattery.

Former Arbroath defender Michael Travis, who has recently been on trial with Forfar Athletic, played in central defence as a trialist, with Shields indicating that a contract may be on the table if the Loons fail to sign him.
