Elderly residents of a Fife village are facing a Christmas shopping crisis, after their local store was targeted by criminals.

East Wemyss is without a convenience store because of an attempted raid last week.

The incident caused significant damage to the branch of Spar, potentially leaving it out of action for weeks to come.

However, with the holiday period fast approaching, Councillor John O’Brien is concerned residents will be without a valuable asset at a crucial time of year.

“This has caused more damage than was first imagined,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I understand the shop will be closed for a number of weeks.

“This is the only shop in the village and with this bad weather, a lot of older people cannot walk far or go to another village to buy food.”

Given the circumstances and the prospect of more cold weather, Mr O’Brien has called on mobile retailers to come to the aid of the people of East Wemyss.

He said: “Can I appeal to any grocer vans and fish vans in the community of Fife to help out in the meantime?

“This is a harsh time for the people of East Wemyss, as they have no other option than to go to Kirkcaldy or Leven to buy the bulk of their Christmas food shopping.”
