Dundee Stars aim to shine against Edinburgh Capitals

Dundee Stars aim to break Edinburgh Capitals’ stranglehold on Elite League matches between the sides when they clash at Murrayfield.

Stars won both Challenge Cup clashes but, so far, Capitals have won all four of the league fixtures between the Scottish ice hockey rivals.

Jeff Hutchins, Dundee’s player/coach, believes Stars have dominated most of the games and outshot the opposition in the process.

Hutchins desperately needs two points as the Tayside team head into the festive programme.

Dundee currently sit in bottom spot but the players remain positive about their chances of making the end-of-season play-offs.

They have collected 15 points from 26 matches.

Edinburgh, in contrast, sit in sixth position with 24 points from 25 matches following a recent purple patch.

Sunday night, however, saw both sides come unstuck. Edinburgh slipped to a 5-2 home defeat to Belfast Giants, the reigning Elite League champions, at Murrayfield.

Dundee, after gaining a confidence boost by winning at second-placed Braehead Clan on Saturday, slipped to a 4-1 defeat at home to the Glasgow side 24-hours later.

That’s despite former Clan star Shane Lust giving the Tayside team a great start by breaking the deadlock after six minutes. That proved Dundee’s only joy.

Lust urged fans to support them in numbers at Murrayfield.

The Canadian has so far claimed 13 goals since his move from Glasgow and he is pleased with the return but added: “We’re here to win games.”

Former Capitals star, Martin Cingel, remains up-beat following Saturday’s victory at Braehead.

He said: “Not many teams will go there and win and we could have won in normal time. We had chances and hit the post and we played really well.

“Sunday, we ran out of gas against a strong team and we also failed to capitalise on chances and you must do that at this level. Braehead also have real strength in depth.”

Looking at tonight’s tussle, he said: “We have won in Edinburgh this season. We go there with a positive attitude and we can win there again.”
