Arbroath’s skatepark will soon be further enhanced by an £18,000 lighting project.
The West Links facility will have eight LED floodlights installed in February.
The huge effort by the community to fund the skatepark has meant there are adequate funds to pay for the “phase two” development.
Jillian Low, chairwoman of Arbroath Skatepark Committee, said she was delighted the next stage will get underway so quickly.
She said: “As the fundraising campaign was so successful, there is enough money left in the pot to cover the costs of floodlighting for the skatepark.
“Needless to say, we are absolutely delighted that we are in the position to install the lighting sooner than planned.”
“Committee members have been in discussion with Angus Council regarding the lighting and it’s looking like the works should be carried out in February.”
She said she had been overwhelmed by the positive comments received about the skatepark since it opened in October. It has proved so popular with youngsters in the town that it has still been used after dark.
“Although a very small amount of light from the streetlights on the Dundee Road has allowed the park to be used after sunset, it is far from ideal,” Jillian added.
“Floodlighting will make it much more enjoyable and indeed safer to use until late into the evening.
“Our committee have been in discussion with Angus Council regarding an appropriate “lights out” time, but a final decision is yet to be made.”
After the lighting project is complete, the group is to consider erecting windbreaks, which would involve more fundraising.
Jillian said: “Because of the location of the skatepark, strong winds are a problem and can, at times, make the park unusable.
“The user group are aware that a windbreak needs to be in place, and that the correct solution will take a deal of consideration. Over the coming year, the committee hope to find a suitable solution to this issue and realise that this will mean more fundraising on their part to meet the extra costs involved.”
