Hundreds offer to rehome dog abandoned at railway station

An animal charity has received hundreds of offers to provide a new home for a Shar-Pei crossbreed discovered tied to a railing outside Ayr station on January 2.

The dog, called Kai, was abandoned along with a suitcase packed with belongings including its pillow, toy, food bowl and food.

More than 100 people offered a new home for the dog on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish SPCA said today: “We’ve been inundated with offers but he’s not gone to a new home yet.

“He’ll be with us for a few more weeks.”

Kai is being cared for one of the charity’s animal shelters in Glasgow.

Inspector Stewart Taylor said the incident showed why it can be dangerous to sell animals online as people often buy animals on impulse.

“The dog is micro-chipped and we were able to find out his name is Kai,” he said.

“We contacted the owner registered to the microchip, who stated they had sold Kai on Gumtree in 2013.

“Unfortunately they could not tell us the address of the person who bought him.”

Some people, such as Courier reporter Kirsty Topping, hoped that Kai’s plight would make people think of other abandoned pets.
