A former Tayside Police divisional commander has died at the age of 85.
Bill Ross was taken ill at his home in Dundee and passed away suddenly at Ninewells Hospital.
His funeral took place this week.
Mr Ross was born in Dundee and grew up in South Baffin Street.
At the age of 14 he was taken on as an apprentice joiner at Baxter Bros jute mill.
He was called up for national service on turning 18 and spent two years in the Military Police’s International Patrol in Vienna.
It would prove a turning point in his career as, after returning briefly to Baxter Bros, he joined the then City of Dundee Police in 1953.
Working mainly in CID, he progressed through the ranks and was a chief superintendent and divisional commander for Angus when he retired from the force in 1988.
Mr Ross then worked as safety and security officer for Dundee United for two years before retiring.
In retirement he was a keen bridge player and golfer at Caledonian Golf Club in Carnoustie, where he had been captain during its centenary year in 1987.
He lived in Dundee’s Craigiebank with his wife Helen until her death in 2002.
They had two sons Andrew, a firefighter, and Malcolm, who followed his father into the police and grandchildren Katrina, Fraser, Callum and Gregor.
