Speed limits on dozens of streets in Perth and Kinross could be slashed in a bid to improve safety.
Following in the footsteps of Edinburgh Council, the local authority is considering reducing the limit to 20mph in Kinross and in the Kinnoull area of Perth.
The move would affect 21 streets leading to one of Perth’s best known landmarks Kinnoull Hill including Bowerswell Road, Corsie Hill Road, Hatton Road, Manse Road, Mount Taber Road and St Mary’s Drive.
In Kinross, roads to the east of the High Street which has had a 20mph limit for a decade could also have their limits reduced.
If the plans are approved, the council will spend £7,000 to replace signs at both locations.
The move has been welcomed by the police but 42% of the 57 people who took part in a consultation exercise objected to the plan.
Just 35% of respondents agreed with the proposals as they stand, while the remainder voiced concerns or suggested alternatives.
The scheme will be considered at a meeting of the enterprise and infrastructure committee on Wednesday.
A report relating to the Kinnoull area proposals states: “It is considered that, by introducing a 20mph speed limit throughout the Kinnoull area, it will encourage motorists to drive through the area at more appropriate speeds.
“Road safety issues have been raised by the residents association regarding the speed of local traffic using the area.
“Some of the roads are narrow and this was highlighted as a concern.”
Committee convener John Kellas explained that, even if councillors agree to the move in principle, there will be further opportunities for people to have their say,
He said: “If approved by the committee, a formal procedure to vary the traffic regulation order (TRO) in Kinnoull will be undertaken.
“This will involve further statutory consultation and the preparation of a draft TRO.
“The draft will be advertised to provide an opportunity for additional comments or objections to be raised, which will be considered by the committee in due course.”
Earlier this week Edinburgh councillors voted through plans that will see the capital become the first city in Scotland to have widespread 20mph zones, although they operate in some towns such as Cromarty in the Highlands.
The only streets in central Edinburgh to retain their 30mph speed limits will be Queensferry Road, London Road and the West Approach Road, along with Minto Street and Dalkeith Road.
Dundee councillors have also suggested introducing 20mph limits for residential streets,
They argue that, as well as improving safety, the speed limit reduction would cut down on damage to roads.
