Excellent weather sees Dundee don sunglasses

The sunny weather saw people in Dundee donning their sunglasses and enjoying an ice cream over the weekend.

Crowds filled the streets of the city centre and Broughty Ferry to take advantage of the welcome mild conditions after one of the coldest winters in 20 years.

By 1pm, a long queue had formed outside Visocchi’s Gelateria on Broughty Ferry’s Gray Street.

Ice cream parlour owner Marco Caira said while they had been busy all weekend it was a bittersweet day due to the blow of the miserable and treacherous weather on the business over the last six months.

He said that while Visocchi’s cafe had not suffered as a result of the cold snap, ice cream sales had been lower since October.

“The weather has not helped since last year. It’s been the worst six months it’s been terrible for everyone in the ice cream business,” he said.

“The problem we have is you have a couple of days like this, but then the weather changes.

“The sun does help especially if it stays fine for the next few days. It is definitely a good sign that people are coming out after the long, hard winter.”

It was a similar story in the city’s west end, at the Ice Cream Parlour on Perth Road.

People were queuing up to get their hands on one of the 20 different flavours on offer.

Manager Erling Binns said, “We’ve been rushed off our feet this weekend, but it’s a nice change from the weather we’ve been having lately.

“Ice cream sales have been poor over the winter, but people have still been coming to us for comfort food like soup and sandwiches.”

“All of the ice cream flavours have been popular, but it’s the old favourites that people tend to go for, like strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and mint.

“We’ve had a look at the forecast and the good weather is supposed to continue into the week it will be fantastic if this happens.

“The recession has been biting all of the businesses so every little bit of good weather makes a massive difference.”
