A social media campaign has been launched in memory of a tragic Tayside footballer.

Former Forfar Athletic player Jack Syme was found dead on Kinnoull Hill near Perth last week after going missing from his Abernethy home.

The 20-year-old defender was nicknamed Cafu after the former AC Milan and Brazil full-back.

Friends and former team-mates have been posting photos of themselves giving a “high five for Cafu” online, in tribute.

The Twitter hashtag #high5forcafu was first used after a memorial football tournament and service held by the club on Thursday.

Jack’s mother Linda Buchan commented: “Thanks to all the lads who turned up to play and everyone who came to support us. Cafu would have loved it.

“Thanks also for the beautiful flowers, Cafu’s shirts and the order of service.

“From the moment we first stepped into Station Park it has been a joy.”

Among those who have taken part are Forfar Athletic players Gavin Swankie and Andrew Steeves, with Mr Swankie urging his followers to “spread the word for the big man”.

Mr Steeves added: “Tragic loss of life. Will be remembered fondly.”

Other former team-mates giving their support included Jamie McLachlan, who wrote: “Thinking of you big man.”

Forfar Athletic chairman Alastair Donald led the tributes and described Jack as a popular lad who was always smiling.

“He was a well-known figure within the club and everybody held him in high regard,” said Mr Donald.

“We are absolutely devastated and our hearts go out to his family. We will do whatever it takes to help them at this difficult time.”

Jack, who played for the under-19 team last season, was in his third year with Forfar but had yet to break in to the first team at Station Park, starting the season on loan at St Andrews United.

Mr Donald said: “A tragedy like this makes you put football into perspective.

“You think that three points on a Saturday is the most important thing it isn’t.”
