After surviving bowel cancer a brave Bankfoot man decided to pull on his running shoes to raise cash for charity.
Sandy Lawrence (59), of Nicoll Drive, has been pounding the pavements since April to prepare for a trio of 10km events in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Sandy, who works for local timber firm Broxwood, wanted to say thank you to staff at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, who helped him through surgery and a course of chemotherapy.
His wife Kaye is being treated for breast cancer at the hospital and he said that the care she is receiving is also “second to none.”
Sandy is hoping to raise more than £1000 by tackling the Perth 10k on Sunday, the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow on September 5 and the Pitlochry 10k on September 26.
“I am very grateful for the way I was treated at Ninewells Hospital and also for the excellent care Kaye has received,” he said. “I really wanted to assist in raising funds to aid further research and thought this would be a challenging way to do it.”
Cancer Research UK’s Tayside area volunteer manager Dorothy Rodger said, “We are absolutely delighted that Sandy has decided to attempt such a great challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
“He has been doing lots of preparation and we’re sure he is going to have an amazing experience. We can’t thank him enough for all his support and want to wish him all the very best on the race days.”
She added, “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters, without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research.”
