The Courier’s Fight for Fairer Fuel has stepped up a gear as we break through the 1000-signature mark on our petition less than a week after launching.
Over 500 readers from all over Scotland have sent in their names on printed petition forms, and over 600 have filled out our online petition.
Here are just a selection of comments submitted online:
The thought of leaving this country is always in my mind. My husband and I both have skilled/ professional jobs and I am sure we could get employment abroad where the quality of life is better and the cost of living more affordable. What kind of future will our children have staying here?
Higher fuel prices will inevitably cripple the economy and hit working families the hardest. It will not hit families once but a few times, since the price of fuel is linked with the cost of everything else, with no increase in workers’ pay.
We are trying to start a small business selling tools and equipment online and part of this involves doing deliveries throughout the south of England. Although we do have a delivery charge, we cannot pass on the full amount to the customer as it out-prices us. I have just returned from London today and the round trip has cost £280 in fuel alone that’s without the insurance, wear and tear and time. Unless the cost comes down considerably, business is going to grind to a halt. For Scotland as one of the oil-richest nations in Europe to allow this to continue is a disgrace. The Parliament must stand up for the people and wrest control of costs from Westminster. A fuel regulator would at least allow some predictability regarding these costs and might even keep increases within reach.
Require my car for work as work in community hospital 25 miles from my house, and the fuel increases are really too much and should not be happening. It is a total disgrace. Totally unfair, it’s OK for the fat cats who can claim everything back, but the ordinary person has to bite the bullet and pay up. We, with the help of The Courier, will stand up and be counted.
Very much in favour of lower fuel prices. I live in Dundee and travel 25 miles to work and another 25 miles home that’s a round trip of 50 miles a day. The cost of this to myself is around £50 a week: that works out at £200 a month just to go to work. I work on a farm in a rural area, so where does the government think that this is fair?
Very pleased that The Courier has taken up this cause and campaigning for lower fuel costs which I am sure is affecting everyone who has to use their car for whatever purpose.
The price of fuel is getting ridiculous. It is not just affecting motorists but every single thing we purchase. They say there is no VAT on food. What is used to deliver it to shops and supermarkets? The fuel regulator needs to be introduced by the government and quick. People’s household budgets are getting blown apart with this crazy fuel tax and VAT.
Trading as Fareway Taxis, Monifieth, the hike in fuel is putting great strain on the viability of the taxi trade. Where are the subsidies that other fare-paying transport organisations receive? It’s about time this is passed on to the taxi trade. Oil companies are now profiteering.
English government ministers won’t care because they don’t have to pay it with having their ministerial cars. I work and all my wages goes to diesel. I’m suffering because I have nothing left at the end of the month. Please, it is the poor that suffer. Stop this hike in price.
Prices are already rising fast on most things (food, clothing etc) and it will only get much worse as the fuel prices keep increasing. Fuel costs are so important to the economy of the whole country that this current escalation is extremely critical and should be curbed.
We already have to pay over-inflated prices for heating oil. In all the years I have lived in Scotland I have never felt so close to packing up everything and moving abroad.
The cost of fuel is getting out of control. It is essential for me as I live in a rural area. I have to commute to work and have to take my child to school. It is frightening how quickly the price is increasing. I already pay huge bills for heating oil, and the fuel for cars is an added worry. Something has to be done, as it effects the price of everything. Everyone is worried about job security, too.
I am on a low income in the public sector and need the car to get to work. No pay rise last year and none this year. I think it’s ridiculous. Got a car and cannot afford to go anywhere in it, only work. They keep saying, ‘If you work you will be rewarded’ so where’s the reward?
Although not living in Scotland, I still have family and friends who do, and are directly affected by fuel costs. In short I feel I have to sign this petition in the hope that something can be done to get a fairer deal on fuel for everybody affected.
The government should reduce VAT on fuel. Remember, it all started with the banks and now Joe Public is paying the price. Fuel prices affect all areas of daily living.
It’s about time Scottish people stood up and not let the government just do what they like. We have to regulate the fuel price, it affects all Scottish families and the poorer will just get poorer.
We have to regulate the fuel. The price is getting too high. It will put a lot of businesses out of work. It’s always the poor working man and women who get hardest hit. Being disabled, my wife and I are dependent on our car. They are going to price us off the road and make us into hermits. The government help me with a motability car then hike prices so much for fuel it hinders my use.If you want to support the Courier’s call for a fuel duty regulator, click here to add your name to our petition.
