The draw for the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup has thrown up the possibility of a Tayside derby between Dundee United and either St Johnstone or Brechin City.
It is believed it will be worth around £80,000 to each club and is a huge financial filip to Brechin in particular.
Weir said, “I wasn’t alone in thinking that we were unfortunate not to be chosen for a televised game for the original match and I’m absolutely delighted that Sky are going to show the replay.
“It should act as motivation for my players to show everybody what they can do, and I’m sure it will.
“St Johnstone had a chance in the last minute on Saturday and looking back at it now, Stevie Reynolds could have cost us a fortune.
“My committee give me an excellent budget to work with and I’ll not be expecting them to start letting me throw money about.Payback”This will be payback for the hard work of everybody at the club and will help keep us on an even keel.”
Saints have cut prices to £10 for adults and £5 for children and pensioners.
Motherwell are due to meet United at Fir Park on March 29, with the provisional date confirmed by the SFA.
However, it is understood that both managers are amenable to a change of date as the game falls two days after Scotland play Brazil at the Emirates Stadium, with several United players in contention for a place in the squad. United manager Peter Houston and Motherwell assistant Kenny Black will both be away with Scotland as part of Craig Levein’s backroom staff for most of the previous week.
Also, Motherwell have had two players called up for international matches on the same night.
Skipper Stephen Craigan, who has 53 caps for Northern Ireland, is to be involved in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia, while keeper Darren Randolph has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for two fixtures, including a friendly against Uruguay on March 29.
Meanwhile, Houston has warned Motherwell not to rule his team out after taking the tie back to Lanarkshire following a thrilling encounter at Tannadice.
Houston is beginning to have a full squad available after a season of injury problems. Jon Daly came off the bench against Well to grab his second goal since returning from hernia surgery and Garry Kenneth was an unused substitute following a knee injury.
Houston said, “I look at the replay that we’re going to have at Motherwell and we will have more players back by then. We’ll have Daly 100% fit. We’ll have Kenneth 100% fit. We’ll have more height in the team. We might have (Scott) Severin as well, who is back training.
“Motherwell came here and did a nice job they played well at times and credit to them for that but if they think the tie is over, it’s far from over because if we play on the day I think we can win the tie at a difficult venue.”
With all eight teams still in the draw, there are several possible permutations before the last four ties take place on the weekend of April 16/17.
Dundee United have a quarter-final replay with Motherwell to negotiate on March 29, while Saints and Brechin will meet for a second time in Perth in seven days.
The other semi-final will be made up of the winners of the Aberdeen and St Mirren replay and the postponed Inverness Caley Thistle versus Celtic tie.
A Saints against United clash would be a re-run of the semi-final of 20 years ago, which the Tannadice club won 2-1.
McDiarmid boss Derek McInnes said, “Obviously I played with United and played alongside Motherwell boss Stuart McCall in my time with Rangers.
“It can be nice to know what awaits you if you get through, but it would be dangerous to look too far ahead.
“It certainly won’t detract from our focus on the Brechin game when it comes around.
“It’s nice to be in the semi-final draw, although ideally we would be safe and secure already in the last four.
“There is still work to be done to get there. We know what is required to progress in the competition.”Semi-finalThe manager of Second Division Brechin, Jim Weir, is hoping that if there is to be an all-Tayside semi-final, it will be fought out between United and his team.
Weir said, “It didn’t matter to me what the draw came up with, to be honest, because the most important thing to me is that we’re still in the competition.
“Dundee United and Motherwell are strong SPL clubs, but so are St Johnstone and we’ve got a big task on our hands in the replay next week.
“We played well on Saturday but we’ll need to up our game even further if we’re to beat them at McDiarmid Park.”
There was fantastic news for the Angus part-time outfit when Sky announced that Tuesday night’s replay will be broadcast live.
