A native of Berwick-upon-Tweed, he joined the SSPCA in 1975 and moved to Dundee in 1982. He also visited schools, speaking on his work. Mr Nicholson was also known for his work with the Samaritans. He retired from the SSPCA in 1998, a year after the death of first wife Janet. A keen gardener, he met second wife Gaye at a flower show and the couple married in 2003. He is also survived by his daughter Lesley, son Neil, stepsons Timothy and Robert and grandchildren Calum, Lauren and Molly.
