More than £20,000 was raised at this year’s Cancer Research UK Relay for Life held at Caird Park in Dundee at the weekend, with further cash set to flood in over the next fortnight.

The 24-hour relay included 23 teams with more than 260 people taking part in total, the biggest turnout in the event’s history. The teams set off at 1pm on Saturday, to the sound of a pipe band.

Later in the evening, the event paused briefly for the Candle of Hope where a poem was read out and inspirational music played before a two-minute silence.

Dundee Relay For Life committee member Christina Gibson said: “It was very emotional. We had a young girl who sang In the Arms of an Angel and it was absolutely beautiful.

“It also has a real fun element, it is a family event. It’s open for all ages and all levels of fitness.”

The event also featured stalls and attractions, with some participants dressing up for the occasion.

Christina said: “The teams walk through the night because it is highlighting 24 hours into cancer research, because the saying goes, ‘cancer never sleeps’.

“We had a team of hairdressers, one from Lochgelly High School, family-based teams and those who have met through work. There’s a big variety.”
