One of the councillors behind the “comedy of errors” that saw one half of the Western Gateway development blocked has hit out at her critics.
Lesley Brennan has said that deputy development management convener Jimmy Black “sounds like he is frustrated” and “wishes to become convener”.
The comments came after the SNP councillor attacked those, including Mrs Brennan, who opposed the plan to build almost 600 new homes near Liff.
She said: “I am very surprised at Councillor Black’s intervention regarding the re-shaping of the development management committee.
“To me, it sounds like he is frustrated by being deputy development management convener and wishes to become convener.
“It is hard to interpret his comments in any other way given it was the convener’s decision to approve “half of the proposed village”.”
Mr Black had branded the amendment to block half of the development, put forward by Ian Borthwick, as “the daftest of daft decisions” and called for the way the committee handles its business to be changed.
Mrs Brennan said: “Having worked at Dundee University’s planning school for five years and being married to a planner, I know the importance of planning and how planning recommendations can be derived.
“Thus, I think proper scrutiny of planning applications is vital.
“I decided to second Baillie Borthwick’s amendments because I respect his wealth of experience gained through his 50 years of service to the city.
“He has seen developments approved, built and then demolished. I take his insights seriously. The people of Dundee also appreciate and respect Baillie Borthwick insights and interventions.”
Plans for the 595 new homes to be built at the western edge of Dundee were thrown into disarray by the decision, which was made on Monday night.
