Dunfermline boss John Potter has said he hopes handing newly re-appointed skipper Josh Falkingham the armband will give the midfielder a new lease of life.
Falkingham was stripped of the captaincy at East End Park last season by former manager Jim Jefferies, but Potter decided to reinstate the 24-year-old when he was named manager earlier this month.
The Leeds-born playmaker led the team out in Potter’s first game in charge against Stranraer and, although Saturday’s game at Brechin fell by the wayside due to the weather, the manager is looking forward to seeing how Falkingham performs.
“Josh was the captain last year, performed very well with it and possibly dipped without it, and I just felt that maybe Andy Geggan was the opposite after playing really well at the start of the season,” Potter explained.
“When the captaincy came along I just thought I’d try something that I thought might work.
“It might get more out of Josh and it might let Andy Geggan just concentrate and get on with his game.
“I spoke to the two of them; they did not have a problem with the decisions I make.
“The guys were fine with it.
“Obviously Andy was disappointed but you probably didn’t notice it with his performance in the game.
“He was absolutely fantastic in training, flying, and it has been possibly a release for him to concentrate on his own game.
“For me it is not that much of a deal, it is an armband at the end of the day.
“You want them all to be leaders, Andy does it naturally with his attitude and his desire.
“I just think that Josh performs better when he has the armband on.
“It possibly means a wee bit more to him.
“That was my thinking, if I can get a wee bit more out of the two of them that’s the most important thing for me.”
