The police and fire service have carried out a joint investigation into the blaze that ravaged the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel on August 18. The fire broke out at 4am that morning, resulting in the wooden front being burnt to leave just ashes. It took 50 firefighters and eight appliances more than three hours to tackle the fire, with crews finally bringing it under control at 7.30am. Appliances stayed at the hotel for much of the remainder of the day to damp down the site. It was understood flames destroyed about 30% of the building, which was unoccupied at the time. Onlookers described hearing “explosions” at the time of the blaze. A police spokesman said: “Although it was unexplained, the fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time.”
