Dundee FC legend Gavin Rae has announced his backing for independence 24 hours after emigrating to Australia.
The former midfielder has been pictured with First Minister Alex Salmond to promote his support for a Yes vote but is now on the other side of the world.
It is understood the Scotland cap, who also played for Rangers, Aberdeen and Cardiff, will make his voice heard via a proxy vote in 12 days’ time.
Gavin, 36, said: “A Yes vote this month is a fantastic opportunity for Scotland to grow and prosper and I fully support Scotland becoming an independent country.
“This vote is an incredible opportunity for Scotland and I have no doubt that a Yes vote will lay the foundations for a new Scotland that truly represents the priorities of people in Scotland.”
Former Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart has been a vocal supporter of independence, while iconic football commentator Archie Macpherson spoke passionately in favour of a No vote at a Dundee rally.
Mr Salmond said: “Gavin’s backing for a Yes vote is hugely welcome. He is the latest person to add his voice to the growing numbers of people who want to see Scotland become an independent country.
“With polling showing increasing numbers of people waking up to the opportunities of a Yes vote, I am sure that we will see many more people like Gavin give their backing to Yes in the days to come.”
