‘Keep the 36’ bus pleas fail to persuade National Express Dundee chief

Mill o’ Mains residents have been left disappointed after National Express Dundee managing director Phil Smith refused to give any concessions over the withdrawal of the number 36 daytime bus service.
The bus company told the city council that on October 20 it intends to withdraw the vast majority of its main bus service journeys to the housing estate, including all but two of the runs of the number 36, which connects Claverhouse, Mill o’ Mains, Linlathen and Mid Craigie with the city centre.
Around 70 residents attended the meeting hoping to hear some concessions from the bus company or that Dundee City Council would offer a glimmer of hope to keep the service running.
However, Mr Smith said it was not commercially viable for the service to continue, although he did indicate he would be willing to enter into talks with the council.
John Berry, the council’s sustainable transport team leader, said the council did not have the money to subsidise the route.
The move has met strong protest from users of the service.
Passengers this morning found ‘Keep the 36’ stickers posted on the windows by a fellow traveller.
