Cupar man jailed for brutal attack on wife

A man who attacked his wife and banged her head off a wall when she tried to call for help has been jailed.

Patrick Arun Verma, 44, of Bonnygate in Cupar, also screamed “how dare you touch me?” when she tried to fend him off, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.

He also admitted breaching special bail conditions to stay away from his wife by attending the marital home in Leuchars on several occasions and meeting her in a local pub.

Depute fiscal Kirsty Urquhart said Verma attacked his wife after he argued on the phone with his adult daughter from a previous relationship.

She said: “After coming off the phone, the accused continued arguing with witness Verma. She tried to defuse the situation by going upstairs but the accused followed her.

“Within the bedroom the accused pushed the witness and slapped her on the face.

“During the assault she fell on the floor and hit her shoulder in the process. She managed to get back to her feet and went to the bedroom window and shouted for help.”

The court heard Verma pushed her away from the window and struck her head off the wall.

Verma’s defence solicitor told the court he had become depressed and stressed and took to drinking before the incident. She said he was on a waiting list for anger management help.

Jailing Verma for three months, Sheriff Alastair Brown said the case was “disturbing”.
