Angus Council performs U-turn on Forfar buildings sale
ByRob McLaren
The historic council building at the centre of controversial Forfar superpub plans will now be sold on the open market.
The dramatic U-turn came after a secret meeting of councillors on Thursday.
Following pressure from a range of local businesses, members reversed their decision two weeks ago to proceed with private negotiations over the possible sale of 5-7 The Cross to pub giant JD Wetherspoon.
Well-known Forfar businessman Ken Parke quickly tabled an improved offer days after the bid became public, prompting Thursday’s behind-closed-doors meeting.
Angus Council are remaining tight-lipped on the issue but the Courier can reveal that the 150-year-old town centre premises will now be advertised and marketed for sale in the near future.
