Wormit Boating Club has launched a new skiff. The 22-foot-long St Ayles skiff, specially built by members of the club, was originally designed in Anstruther. It has been named Catalina in honour of the Norwegian flying boats which were stationed at nearby Woodhaven during the Second World War. Club member David Winch said: “It’s a really good thing for the club and the town.” In addition to the launch of the new boat, a bottle of whisky was presented to visitors from Royal Tay Yacht Club, based in Broughty Ferry. The two groups built St Ayles skiffs and were challenged by the creator, Alex Gordon, to take part in a construction wager. First club to construct their skiff and row across the Tay would be given the bottle of whisky. The Broughty Ferry skiff sailed a day before the Wormit boat. David said: “We were ahead in construction, but we had some problems and delays and they sailed on Wednesday.” Members of St Andrews and Leven rowing clubs were also present to see the skiff take to the water.
