Police probe suspicious fire at Perthshire farm

The fire at Pittendynie Farm ripped through a barn and caused extensive damage to a digger.

A fire at a Perthshire farm may have been started deliberately, police have said.

Officers are investigating the cause of the blaze, which broke out in a storage barn at Pittendynie Farm, Moneydie, on Tuesday night.

The fire is believed to have cause tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Up to 300 straw bales and a JCB digger were destroyed and the steel-framed barn has been reduced to little more than a skeleton.

Fire crews were called at around 9.40pm. Two crews attended initially, with a further three joining them later.

The fire crews worked throughout the night to control the blaze and protect the surrounding buildings.

It is believed the farm’s owners were away for the night and were only alerted to the fire at 7am.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Colin Lorimer said police were also looking into a theft at the farmhouse.

He said: “It’s a suspicious incident but it’s too early to say if it was deliberate or an accident.

“There appears to be items missing from the house and machinery has been moved in another area of the farm steading.

“The owner says he has not moved the machinery. It all seems to have taken place at the same time.”

He added that a full fire investigation would be carried out.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “Firefighters fought the fire in two sectors using two hose reel jets.

“They brought the fire under control by 6.58am this morning and crews remain on scene to monitor the fire ground and carry out damping down operations.”
