An Angus tennis club’s fundraising bid has been backed by nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova.
Arbroath Lawn Tennis Club wants to rip up the three clay courts and replace them with artificial courts and floodlights.
The move would allow tennis to be played all year round and the club, which is a registered charity, is well on its way to achieving its fundraising target of £180,000.
Fundraising, grants and pledges have already been made following four years of hard work but the club is still around £30,000 short.
The club has been shortlisted for a Bank of Scotland Community Fund Award along with three other local organisations.
This means they could be awarded anywhere between £500 and £3,000 depending on the number of votes they receive.
President Graham Crabb said: “People can vote for the club by tweeting #COMMFUND GNK.
“So far, the most famous retweet the club has had is from multiple Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova.
“We were absolutely delighted to receive the support of the greatest female tennis player of all time.”
A fashion show which was staged by Karen B of Broughty Ferry took place in the Meadowbank Inn and raised more than £2,100.
Meanwhile, Mr Crabb took part in the Trossachs 10k, running it in 57 minutes and 21 seconds, and raised £1,800 towards the all-weather court fund.
Donations can still be made at www.justgiving.com/altc10k.
As part of the initiative to raise funds for new courts, the club are now approaching local businesses with a view to them providing some sponsorship.
The next event on the fundraising calendar is a bingo night which will be held in Arbroath Bowling Club, Dishlandtown Street, on November 21.
Anyone who wants to vote for the club can go to www.bankofscotland.co.uk/communityfund, or text GNK to 82332 or tweet #COMMFUND GNK.
The artificial surface would allow it to extend its reach even further and eventually employ a full-time coach.
The club has already helped bring through 19-year-old starlet Jonny O’Mara who is ranked around 900 in the world.
