The family of missing man Jon Anderson Edwards have learned an unidentified man was seen apparently drowning in the sea near to where he disappeared in Portugal.
Mr Edwards, of Arbroath, has been missing from his flat in Lagos on the south coast since September 15.
The 30-year-old started work as a chef at the start of last month. A head injury three days before he went missing left him dizzy and off work.
The family were alerted to a Portuguese newspaper article about an unidentified man who is thought to have drowned off the west coast beach of Monte Clerigo, near Aljezur, last Wednesday.
Lagos ports captain Carvalho Pinto said police do not know the man’s identity and no one has been reported missing from the beach.
The alarm was raised by surfer Tiago Dias who saw the man “disappear” into the water and not come back to the surface.
Mr Edwards’s mother Lesley has raised the report with the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ).
Sister Kenna Balion said: “It is very frustrating dealing with the PJ. The fact the two incidents weren’t linked is worrying.”
A spokesman from Lagos Port Captain’s office said the swimmer had not yet been found and that the search was continuing.
