MPs to have more time to debate wider Scottish powers

MPs will engage in a full debate on more powers for Scotland after the intervention of a Perthshire politician.

Discussion on plans to devolve further responsibility to Holyrood came under fire after it emerged just half an hour was being set aside for the issue.

Only former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and a Scotland Office minister were due to speak during the short session.

Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart wrote to Speaker of the House, John Bercow, and Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael appears to have now signalled a large-scale debate will take place next week.

Mr Wishart said: “This is very welcome news.

“I don’t know why Gordon Brown thought he could get away with his suggestion to hold just a half-hour debate. He has been hopeless in his attempts to hold Westminster and their ‘vow’ to account.

“This is a Government debate and must, therefore, be led by the Prime Minister.

“He has to look the people of Scotland in the eye and say he will honour the vow he and the leader of the opposition gave, without any conditions.”

Mr Carmichael said: “Gordon Brown got a half-hour adjournment debate, which is what is available to a back-bencher, but we’ve got control of the Government timetable so there will be a proper debate in Government time on the consequences of the referendum.”
