Cracks in wall close Stirling curling rink down

An olympic curling practice venue in Stirling has been shut to protect the public after cracks were discovered in the building.

The ice rink at the Peak Centre, where curlers practised in the run-up to this year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, was closed on the orders of structural engineers.

A statement on the venue’s website confirmed it was likely to be a “few weeks” until it reopened for skating.

It stated: “As the ice rink is now closed this means that, unfortunately, all ice activities and ice bookings, including public ice skating sessions, ice skating lessons, curling, ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating will not be available for the next few weeks.”

An investigation into minor cracks in the ice rink wall established there was a structural weakness in the blockwork.

A spokesperson for Stirling Council said: “The contractors are working with Active Stirling and ourselves to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are doing all we can to ensure the safety of the ice rink is restored as soon as possible.”

The rest of the facilities remain open and will continue to operate as normal.
