Fife mum’s plea to council for help to ground ‘Spiderman’

Owen Allan by the wooden slats that cover his familys three-storey flat. His mother Wendy is worried about the Spiderman-obsessed youngster climbing the slats and injuring himself.

A worried mum is appealing to Fife Council to remove slats on the side of her three-storey flat to stop her Spiderman-obsessed son risking his life by climbing up them.

Wendy Geddes, 40, of Ramsay Place, Rosyth, said she is “terrified” five-year-old Owen Allan could fall to his death unless something is done about the ladder-like slats he has taken to scaling.

So far, Wendy has witnessed Owen scaling the property on two occasions.

When questioned, superhero fan Owen said he wanted to get to the top to check there were no villains at large in the area.

She said: “He was just sitting there with his legs dangling off the top of the roof.

“When we got him down the first time, we asked what he was doing up there and he said he wanted to be like Spiderman and backflip off.

“He’s fearless but if he falls from that height, he’ll kill himself. With the weather getting worse now, there’s more chance he might slip and fall.

“I can’t keep him under lock and key but I can’t keep an eye on him every second either.”

Wendy said she had also witnessed other children in the area climbing up the slats and had shouted at them in the past to get down in case they came to any harm.

Daredevil Owen’s antics left Wendy so worried she contacted Fife Council begging for action to be taken to help prevent her son performing any future death-defying stunts.

She has asked council officers to put in place something to cover the gaps of the slats, such as chicken wire or alter them so they cannot be climbed up so easily, maybe making the slats vertical.

A spokeswoman for Fife Council said the wooden slats were a feature of many properties in the area and there had been no other complaints from other residents.

Jan Halley, lead officer for access and support, said: “Recently, officers visited the property to investigate the complaint.

“These wooden slats are a design feature on many of the properties in this area and enclose the drying area for the flats. Ms Geddes has been advised not to allow her child to climb up the outside of the flats.”
