Regulars shocked by mysterious closure at Macgregor Auctions

People turning up at a St Andrews auction for the regular sale on Thursday were surprised to discover a closed sign on the door.

No one from the 150-year-old MacGregor Auctions could be contacted for comment on Thursday.

But a neighbouring business told The Courier the auction house had been closed since at least Monday.

One man who turned up to the Largo Road business on Thursday was Perthshire antique dealer Brian Blair, of Aberfeldy. He told The Courier: “I’m a regular and I was surprised to see it closed. It’s a good sale.

“I go to a lot of auction houses across Scotland and Macgregors is one of the major ones. It’s always good for a bargain. It’s a good honest sale room.”

Macgregors has been on the go for more than 150 years and is still a favourite gathering place for experts and interested locals.

Every fortnight, on Thursday and Friday mornings, people stream inside either to buy or simply watch some live entertainment unfold before their eyes.

Owner Sandra Urie, who has suffered ill health, and her husband Ian have been synonymous with the auction house for decades.
